Emily in action on the BUCS Student Tour

Golf Sports Scholar Emily Toy hits the European Tour

Second year Exercise and Sports Science student Emily Toy heads to Abu Dhabi this week for the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in her first appearance on the European Tour.

Having qualified for the event after winning the annual R&A Foundation Scholars tournament in St Andrews earlier in the year by 2 shots and finishing 8 under par, Emily has had a strong start to the 2017-2018 season on the BUCS Student Tour.  Taking the title at the Northern tournament alongside fellow Exeter High Performance golfer Bradley Scott who won the men’s event, Emily is focused on qualifying for the BUCS Student tour finals in April.

The Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open is the first ladies professional golf event to take place in Abu Dhabi and will host a field of 126 Ladies European Tour players. The Ladies European Tour consists of 16 events hosted all over the world and attracts some of the best female golfers, with Anna Nordqvist from Sweden currently leading the 2017 order of merit.

Supported by a University of Exeter Sports Scholarship and R&A bursary Emily hopes to continue to secure starting spots on the European Tour and play golf at the highest level. The University of Exeter Sports Scholarship Scheme provides a comprehensive support services package to enable student athletes to reach their sporting and academic potential. Similarly the University's golf programme is generously supported by the University's Alumni Golf Days and by The R&A, who supports student golfers financially to enable them to compete at the highest level while they are studying and currently invests over £300,000 in student and University golf across the UK.

Looking ahead to the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open Emily commented “I’m really looking forward to playing on the European Tour and competing amongst some of the best female golfers in Europe. It’s a big step up for me and my golf but I’m definitely going to make the most of the opportunity”.

Reflecting on Emily’s most recent achievement High Performance Manager (Sport) Charlotte Hale added “We are extremely proud of Emily’s golfing achievements to date and wish her the very best of luck in her first European Tour event. It’s fantastic to have one of our Sports Scholars competing at this level and we look forward to seeing her progress further throughout her time at University”.

With our 2017-2018 BUCS season under way Emily is part of our  1st team  who compete in BUCS Premier South and are hoping to progress to the later stages in the Championship knockout competition this year. Early victories over University of Surrey and University of South Wales got the season off to a flying start and with a hotly contested loss against their biggest rivals Bournemouth University, Exeter will be looking to take the win on the return fixture.
