Having had a sports scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year enabled me to train and perform consistently and effectively in both, my studies and chosen sport. I strongly believe that the scholarship and support system I've received has made a positive impact on the current success I've had this year.
BSc Exercise and Sport Sciences
Golf - Exeter students achieved 9 top 3 finishes in the BUCS Student Tour events and 4 men and 3 women qualifying for the Tour Finals. 1st team captain Monty Scowsill was proud of the clubs achievements, "It's been an extremely successful season both individually and as teams. For me finishing in the top 5 in all 5 BUCS Student Tour events I played in is something I’m proud of. The 1st team lost in the finals weekend to an extremely strong Stirling team, who bolstered 5 international players and the 2nd team were edged out in defense of thier title 5-4 by University of St Andrews 2nd. However, a BUCS semi-final and a silver is something to be proud of and we strive for Gold next year!"
Tennis - Performance Burser Athena Nathalia finished the 2017-2018 BUCS season unbeaten in league and cups matches, assisting the women’s 1st team to a fantastic 4th place in the BUCS National League. As a result of her efforts she was crowned number 1 on the British Universities Leaderboard. Athena felt it was a highly competitive year, "We were so close to 3rd place in the Premier National League but fell short by 2 rubbers. The team worked hard and showed exceptional spirit and our coaches regulalry go above and beyond. Without this support from the High Performance Programme, it would have been impossible to balance our academics and a high standard of tennis. Once I have completed my studies I can get back into intensive training and look to play some professional tennis tournaments in the UK and overseas."
Rugby - The Men's team secured an important win resulting in a place in the South West Premier League after winning the BUCS Super League. Sam Morley and James McRae have both signed professional contracts with Exeter Chiefs and Simon Linsell, George Gosling, Felix Maddison, Aaron Bagwell and Ted Landray were all selected for England Students. Our Women's team won the Women's Championship at Twickenham in a fantastic game that went into extra-time. Lagi Tuima, Caity Mattinson, Poppy Leitch, Hollie Cunningham, Jess Thomas and Ebony Jefferies were all involved with England teams this year which shows the quality in the Womens team and is a testament to the hard work that goes in from all the coaching staff and support services.
Gym investment - We are very busy this summer, replacing 32 cardio-vascular machines in the gym at the Sports Park and all the cardio-vascular equipment in the gym at St Luke's Sports Centre. We are also creating dedicated HIIT areas in the Sports Park gym with new equipment as well as investing in equipment and training to offer gym floor classes and workshops. Additionally, our fitness class programme will be getting a revamp with lots of new and innovative classes being planned.
Cricket Centre - The Cricket Centre is receiving a major overhaul with new netting, new lanes, new high performance lighting as well as a full refresh of the flooring. We are also installing a purpose-designed large coaching screen linking to the video analysis technology.
