Club overview

Do you want to try a fast paced, hard hitting and exciting new sport? American football has become extremely popular at university level, with over 60 teams competing in the National League. The Exeter Demons quickly established themselves as a National play-off contender, reaching the play-offs twice since the club’s inception in 2009, in a sport which has playing positions to suit all skill sets and all individuals, making it a sport for everyone. The club combines three padded training sessions a week with use of the High Performance gym to create a team that regularly pushes the best teams in the League to the title. It doesn’t matter if you have never played before, as our qualified coaching staff will have you padded up and making big plays in no time! The club also prides itself on being friendly and welcoming, having a great social atmosphere with its members regularly meeting up off the football field for socials or to watch NFL matches at our sponsors sports bar. Similarly the club offers other opportunities to get involved with sport at university in general, regularly competing in intramural sports such as football and dodgeball. If you want a social and friendly club that is one of the most successful at the university then why not try an exciting new sport? Look out for our fresher’s taster sessions on the crumb; we hope to see you there!

Club overview

EUABC has become one of the fastest growing clubs at the university. Whether you are a complete beginner wanting to try something new and get fit or a experienced fighter we cater towards all interests in boxing. Our workouts are fun, informative and excellent exercise. We are partnered closely with a local boxing gym (PFA), who have highly experienced and respected coaches. As well as hosting two sessions a week at their gym, on occasion they also assist with university sessions. The club has consistently placed highly in the British Universities and Colleges Sports league and squad members have brought home medals from the University Championships every year we have entered. For ambitious  beginners who want to compete we will be running a 10 week training programme to take you from the absolute basics to your first bout at an event halfway through first term. This will be a fantastic experience and another memory to add to your time at university. We have won many AU awards including ‘University Sports Club of the Year 2014-15’ and back to back ‘Student Coach of the Year’ in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. But we are not just a club of elite boxers, we pride ourselves in being a fun club with people who  want to get fit and enjoy the level they are comfortable at, disproving the myth that boxing is an unfriendly sport. So come to one of our sessions, sign up, and make one of the best decisions of your time here.

Twitter: @exeterunicanoe

Club overview

Exeter University Canoe Club (EUCC) is the perfect club for anyone wanting to try something new, develop existing skills, or explore all that the South West has to offer. Exeter has access to some of the best white-water and surf in the country and we make the most of this through weekly trips to local rivers and beaches. Throughout the year, we also run several weekends away to locations such as rivers in South Wales, Cardiff International White Water Centre, the Tryweryn river in North Wales, and Polzeath in Cornwall for our annual inter-university surf kayaking weekend. The year finishes with our much-anticipated summer Alps trip.

If you’ve got a competitive side, we compete at BUCS in Canoe Polo, Wild Water Racing and Slalom as well as at regular inter-university Polo competitions, and various Flatwater races. Members enjoy the use of all necessary equipment and can take advantage of expertise and training run by more experienced members. If you are keen to advance, we offer discounted qualifications and there are plenty of opportunities to hone your skills: at pool sessions, polo training sessions, competitions and river trips.

On top of all this, we have weekly socials, ranging from quieter nights in to themed nights out, including bigger events such as our annual Adventure Ball. Come to a taster session and give it a go!

Club overview

No other sport can boast the wide variety of challenges and thrills that caving offers. Experience all aspects of this adrenaline filled pursuit and navigate the cave systems of the UK by abseiling waterfalls, climbing boulders, traversing gorges, squeezing through crevices, swimming in underground lakes, ascending potholes and crawling through stream passages. All this and more, while getting muddier than you ever imagined possible, with only a head torch to light your way. We cave for the rare opportunity to marvel at the wondrous natural masterpieces that have remained hidden in the darkness, frozen in time, and reserved only for the intrepid few who dare to seek them out.

All training, insurance, and equipment for the year are provided as part of your membership fee (£30). Weekend trips across the country start at only £15 each time (to cover travel, food, accommodation, and cave entry fees). Join us for a Fresher’s week day trip to a local cave and see why all of us at Exeter Caving Club have fallen in love caving.

Club overview

After having the misfortune of relegation in the 2015 season, EUMCC bounced straight back up in 2016 by not only winning the league, but beating rivals Bristol in the play-off final at Coombe Dingle. Other success has come in the indoor competition, with the EUMCC Indoor 2nd team winning the Trophy final in 2017/18 and the EUMCC Indoor 1st team reaching the National Finals at Lords in 2018, currently ranking us in the top 4 sides in the country. International recognition for the Club came in 2017/18 with seamer Ethan Bamber representing England at the U19 World Cup, as well as signing a professional contract with Middlesex. County representation has also come in recent years, with 2015 leaver Tom Abell being appointed Somerset CCC Captain. Focus for the 1XI for the 2019 season will be on a return to BUCS Premier A.

Club overview

The University of Exeter's Fencing Club aims to cater for all abilities, from beginners to experienced fencers in a friendly and stimulating environment. We are a growing club that has seen a lot of development over the last few years. The club provides weekly training both for beginners and experienced fencers in all three weapons: epee, foil and sabre. Also, from this year, the club will have wireless electric fencing in all three weapons.
We have an extensive programme for beginners, who are trained by top level professional coaches and the club's committee. Competitions and fun sessions are organised monthly for beginners to improve the basic skills they learn in the first term and to get a taste for competitive fencing. Weapons and kit are provided by the club for all of those who do not have their own.
The Fencing Club is also a competitive environment where experienced fencers from different countries have a chance to continue to improve their skills with high quality coaching, participate in UK regional and national competitions and represent the University of Exeter in BUCS competitions. The club has both a women’s and men’s team, who fence other South Western universities in BUCS leagues and cups. Once a year, experienced fencers also have the opportunity to enter BUCS individuals national competition.

The club also has a great social side with regular social events, ranging from dinners to intramural sports to nights out, providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all members and a chance to make great friends.

Club overview

The University of Exeter Hockey Club has long been an integral aspect of the University and is currently one of Exeter’s High-Performance Clubs. The men’s club fields 6 teams in BUCS and 7 in men’s hockey leagues, playing universities and clubs allover the country. EUHC have finished as one of the top two universities in BUCS rankings since 2011.

Last year was a special one for us. As a club we had a strong year on and on off the pitch. However, the real highlight of the year was the success of our 1st team. The 1XI achieved promotion to the National Premier League, the highest hockey league in the country. This means that in the coming season we will be going up against professional players and Olympians. Further successes have seen our 2XI winning BUCS gold, and our 4XI and 5XI being promoted from their respective BUCS leagues last year, as well as our 5XI also winning their saturday league.

Our success has attracted high quality coaches and players, this quality is represented throughout the club as a whole and, along with our fantastic facilities, has helped make us one of the most successful clubs on campus.

Furthermore, EUHC consistently has the most sort-after social calendar year after year. Notorious for regularly organising mixed socials with women’s hockey, EUHC also brags an assortment of all-day events. With the summer Timepiece boat party, the nationally renowned ‘Edinburgh Fives’ and an infamous End of Season Dinner, few sports clubs can compete. EUHC also encourage members to get involved in club events that help to support our chosen charities; MIND, the Movember Foundation and the Unogwaja Foundation.

Finally, our Intramural programme enables students to play mixed hockey in an extremely social and enjoyable environment, whilst also being coached by members of our 1XI who have represented England U21s. With matches running every Sunday evening, Intramural is ideal for taking time out from your academic routine.

Club overview

In the last three years, EULHC has been very successful across our six teams both on and off the pitch. The spirit of the club is evident in the flocks of players who watch other team’s matches and there is constant positive support given out to all teams across the club.

On the pitch, the 1st XI got to the BUCs finals 3 years ago only narrowly losing 2.1 and have since achieved great success in the league, maintaining a place in the national league (finishing mid table for the last two years). Varsity as always was a highlight of this season, with over 400 supporters heading up to the aqua to support both our women’s and men’s teams. Once again, this spotlight fixture did not disappoint and was a massive occasion for the club, sadly we lost on penalty flicks to a strong Loughborough outfield.

The entire club has been hugely successful in maintaining league positions or achieving promotion, especially in the most recent 2017-18 season. The 2nd and 5th XIs finished a comfortable second place in South B and Western 3A league respectively and the 4th XI finished mid table. The most successful team in this season was the 3rd XI who achieved promotion in both Wednesday BUCs and Saturday local league whilst winning silver in the cup, again narrowly losing this final on penalty flicks, this time to Swansea 1st XI.

The 6th XI entered the BUCs competition for the first time in the 2017-18 season and came second in the newly formed Western 4A only on goal difference. This team was vastly successful, ending the season winning BUCs gold in a thrilling game which saw Exeter score a late equaliser and to finally win a game on penalty flicks (not normally a strong point of ours…!)

On to the upcoming 2018-19 season the future looks very bright!! We have added a 7th training/development team to work alongside our 6 BUCs teams which is very exciting as we push for greater success, building on the achievements of the last three years.

Club overview

One of the most popular and well-known martial arts, karate is a system of self-defence originating from Japan combining kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Our sessions are led by the highest ranked KUGB Dan grade in the South West, Sensei Trevor Jarett (6th Dan). With his guidance and instruction, members can advance through the ranks with termly gradings and train towards national competitions, in which the club has already enjoyed much success.

Karate classes at the University have plenty to offer for complete beginners, as well as experienced students. It is a fun way to make friends and keep fit. Complete beginners and experienced students will benefit from all our sessions including two student led ones. Our various socials give members more opportunity to meet new people and make karate one of the best parts of your student life.

Club overview

University is all about trying new things, so why not give Korfball a go!

We welcome all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced players.

Korfball is a Dutch version of Basketball but has similarities to both English Netball and Basketball. It is a mixed gender non-contact sport with four guys and four girls on each team, alternating between attack and defence. The ultimate aim is to get the ball in the hoop!

We are an enthusiastic sports club whose training sessions accommodate those who are keen to play casually or competitively. Alongside training and matches, there is also a great social side to the club. We’re a relaxed and friendly bunch who love a good social.

Club overview

As the largest and most established women’s AU Club at the University of Exeter, EUNC welcomes all standards. The University of Exeter Netball 1st team competes in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) South Premier Division and also the Netball South West Regional League through a partnership with Exeter Netball Club (ENC). With a further five teams competing in BUCS and over 20 University-League teams, every member of the club has the opportunity to play a match, train with coaches, improve on their fitness and attend a social each week.

As the club has seen rapid growth over the last 2 years from 11th in BUCS rankings 2013-2014 to 6th in BUCS rankings 2014-2015, the club objective is to achieve and maintain a top 5 finish in BUCS rankings. Our 1st team target is to achieve a top three finish in the South Premier Division and reach semifinal stages of the championship. Collectively we aim to support the development of individuals to reach their potential so that they leave the University as all round better athletes with a greater tactical and technical awareness.

On top of all this, we have an annual Christmas dinner, tour and End of Season dinner, allowing the club to come together as a whole to celebrate our successes throughout the year.  EUNC is the perfect club for any girl, whether you’re looking for competitive match play or just a chance to play netball and make new friends, EUNC is the club for you.

Polo

Club overview

The Exeter University Polo Club (EUPC) is one of the biggest, most inclusive successful university polo clubs in the UK. We have a diverse membership which competes at all levels of university polo, from beginners who have never sat on a horse before to professional polo players who have played for years.

We regularly compete in varsities in the South West and venture as far away as Durham and St Andrews. We have frequently sent teams to the British Beach Polo Championships, held at Sandbanks in Poole. We compete in National Leagues and tournaments, in which we have seen great success. In the 2016/17 season our Novice team won the National League and in 2017/18 came home with bronze. In those two years, our Beginners also came 3rd and 2nd respectively, establishing Exeter as one of the strongest university polo clubs across the country. In the same year, we also asserted our position as the dominant force in the South West, winning both the Druids University League for Novice/Intermediate players and the Super League, which is aimed at players with established HPA handicaps.

The highlight of our year is SUPA Winter and summer nationals, which give teams of all abilities the opportunity to compete against universities from all over the country and is a huge social event for the clubs. Alongside the polo itself, the club runs fortnightly socials on various days. These events range from pub crawls to chilled pizza evenings, so there is always something for everyone to enjoy. Our Christmas and End of Season black tie dinners are the highlight of the social calendar, attracting many guests not just from within the club, but from other universities such as Bristol, Southampton and Durham. Our social events can also take us international, as in 2017 we managed to get a group together to go watch the Snow Polo in St Moritz which was incredible and one event we will definitely endeavor to do again.

All in all, we are a welcoming, sociable and relaxed club. You can play as much or as little as you like and everyone gets the opportunity to play in matches, no matter what standard you are playing at. Why not give something new a try and become a member of one of the most successful and welcoming polo clubs in the country? We promise you won’t regret it.

Club overview

“No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.” Winston Churchill hit the nail right on the head, join EURC and you can guarantee you will have an amazing year. Whether you have never sat on a horse before or compete at an affiliated level, there is something for everyone. We have four British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) teams and two Friendlies teams, which compete regularly throughout the year. You can earn a place on a team by taking part in trials, held in September. Our teams had great success in the 2017/2018 season with two of our team qualifying for the national finals, with one team winning BUCS GOLD.

For those people not on teams, there are more opportunities than you could know what to do with. We organise lessons for all abilities at the local stable: Oaklands. The staff there are friendly and there is a wide range of horses. The club receives a discount on lessons too. In addition, EURC runs an in-club league to offer everyone the chance to take part in competitions and win some rosettes. Throughout the year there will be various other activities such as beach rides, cross country lessons and hacks. If you don’t fancy riding but still want to be around horses, you can volunteer for the local Riding for the Disabled Group. You can also play for the riding club intramural netball team.

Club overview

The University of Exeter Rugby League Club (EURL) is a successful, welcoming, ambitious and rewarding club. Over the last few seasons the club has enjoyed success for both the 1st and 2nd XIII with both teams playing in their highest league possible. The first team, having gone unbeaten in winning the South West 1A League in 2013/14, now compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Premier South League finishing 3rd and successfully reaching the BUCS quarter finals last season, a result we are looking to improve on this year. Just in this last year, three players, helped by weekly S&C sessions of the same standard offered by Super League clubs, have gained recognition from National League One clubs in addition to another player returning from having spent a year playing professionally at Toulouse Olympique.

For those looking for more relaxed but still competitive rugby league, our 2nd XIII compete in South West 1A with regular fixtures every BUCS Wednesday alongside cup fixtures. The vast majority of current players had never tried League before University and the transition from Union could not have been easier and we will be there to help you every step of the way. As a club we continue to look to develop the sport of Rugby League in the South West and establish Community links which we hope can set up roots for the game to spread. EURL is for any player, of any ability, whether you want a new challenge, develop your skills or just play casually, EURL welcomes all and we look forward to meeting you.

Club overview

The Snooker and Pool club is a great club to join whether you are an experienced player or a complete beginner looking for a casual game.

We have three organised training sessions a week where you can play snooker, 8-ball and 9-ball pool. At training sessions, members play friendly games against each other at the local snooker and pool hall, All Stars. All abilities are welcome, and training is flexible - you can turn up as often as it suits you. The club has a strong social aspect, and you can look forward to several fun and relaxed events during the year.

For those looking for some competitive action and to develop their game, we run tournaments and leagues throughout the year. We also participate in several inter-university tournaments, including the national British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) 9-ball, pool and snooker championships. We have gained an excellent reputation, having won each of these events in the last four years. Last year, we entered our first ever women’s team to BUCS pool, something we are hoping can continue in the coming years.

So if you're looking to play an enjoyable, sociable sport, with or without a competitive edge, this is the club for you!

Snowsports

Email: snowsports.captain@exeter.ac.uk

Club overview

Following the exciting merger of Exeter Snowsports and Exeter Ski Club, SSX is the University’s brand new Snowsports Club. Set to be the biggest AU club on campus, SSX has so much to offer whether you’re a seasoned pro or a total beginner. By far the most unmissable aspect of SSX is the Easter Ski Trip. Hundreds of students set foot into the mountains for a week of snow, socials and steeze. Been skiing annually with your family since age 3? That’s no comparison to a uni ski trip… Never seen a mountain before? What better (and cheaper) place to start than with SSX?!

To those looking to compete in BUCS, there are multiple opportunities to go fast or get upside down with trips running throughout the year for our freestyle or race teams. Race training happens weekly at the local dry slope and freestyle takes regular dry slope, diving and trampoline trips to nail those backflips. Beyond our obvious addiction to snow, our social calendar is probably the most exciting of any AU club, meaning SSX is a must even those who prefer their ice in their drinks rather than under their feet. So far we have brought Shy FX and Sean Kingston to Timepiece (Exeter’s largest club), had a 900 person bar crawl, hosted an alpine Mountain Meal in Bierkeller and organised a 200 member Black Tie End of Season Dinner. Next year is going to be even better with bigger and more diverse socials so, skier or not, membership of SSX will not be regretted.

Right on our doorstep we have some of the best breaks in the UK, so we run trips every Saturday to Devon or Cornwall (wherever the waves are best!). We also run 3, week long trips abroad throughout the year – some past locations include Morocco, Portugal, Spain and France.

The club caters for all surfing abilities; for beginners, we offer the chance of lessons with various surf schools on all our trips and kit is always available to rent if you don’t have any of your own. For those more acquainted with the water, there Is the opportunity to compete in competitions like BUCS, as well as lots of water time and the chance to hone in on your skills on a variety of waves.

There is fun out of the water on offer too! We are an inclusive bunch and run regular socials throughout the year. We also run a number of our legendary Newquay Weekenders, which involve a weekends worth of surfing and Newquay’s nightlife. We also take part in intermural tournaments and try our hand (badly) at netball, dodgeball and rounders.

Moreover, we take great pride in being able to honestly say we excel in creating a close, second-family feel within the club; everyone is welcome regardless of age or gender, beginner or black belt, recently trained or coming back after a break! Touch Rugby

Club captain: Eleana Panayotou Ennes
Email: touchrugby.captain@exeter.ac.uk
Facebook: Exeter University Touch Rugby Club
Twitter: @ExeterUniTRC

Club overview

EUTRC is at the forefront of Touch Rugby’s huge ascent over the last couple of years, and is now one of the widest-played sports at UK universities. It’s a fast-paced, athletic game that equally welcomes those from a rugby-playing background and those who want to pick up a casual social sport. It’s a test of fitness, speed, agility and ball control, played in both mixed and same-sex teams.

For those looking to take up a high-performance sport seriously, EUTRC offers quality coaching from our cohort of regional and national players, as well as fitness and agility sessions.

The club’s standard of play has continued to grow; this year we are the champions of the University Touch Series, after having placed 2nd last year. In Spring Chicks (the largest women’s touch rugby tournament in the Northern Hemisphere), our girls came 4th this year and 3rd in 2017.

Our members vary from those looking to seriously compete at national university tournaments, to those looking to keep fit, to those looking to try something new. There’s a side of the club for everyone, which is something we continuously pride ourselves upon. Our sociable atmosphere is at the heart of everything we do; the mixed teams allow us to train and compete together every week, which makes for an enjoyable atmosphere. We have socials every Friday (catering to those who are keen for a Wednesday night sports social), which are often attended by a huge majority of the club, allowing everyone to get together away from the field and enjoy themselves. This friendly atmosphere extends into all aspects of the club, making it one of the most enjoyable clubs to be a part of at Exeter.

Plus, we have tours each year to somewhere a little more sunny - venturing to Barcelona and Valencia in the past!

Triathlon

Club captain: Simon Jones
Email: triathlon.captain@exeter.ac.uk
Website: www.universityofexetertriathlon.co.uk
Facebook: University of Exeter Triathlon Club
Twitter: @ExeterUniTri

Club overview

We are a friendly club that offers a versatile training programme in the three disciplines of Triathlon; swimming, cycling and running – and we are proud to cater to both seasoned racers and newcomers alike. We have at least 6 training sessions a week (3 swimming, one spin session, one track session, circuit session and a group cycle). These weekly training sessions are tailored to suit all levels of ability, and you will always be able to find other club members willing to join you for a run or a bike ride outside of training.

As a club we pride ourselves on the range of ability throughout the club, from elite athletes to people who have never done a Triathlon before. We aim to ensure that all training sessions are fun while developing our members to improve their fitness and helping them to achieve personal goals ranging from training for an Ironman to a new 5km PB.Whilst we concentrate as a team on the 3 BUCs races we compete in each academic year, we encourage our members to get involved in all types of competition, from local meets to more prestigious races such as the London ITU. We have an open policy for competitions where there is no selection process or minimum ability to compete for the uni, only your desire to race!

In addition to Triathlons, the club competes in Aquathlons and Duathlons as well as races in the individual sports: Swimming, Cycling and Running. The club also runs many socials and events outside of the normal training schedule. Socials are aimed at everyone with a mix ranging from dinners to quiet catch ups down the pub to crazy fancy dress nights. Other events include one off Beach Training sessions at Dawlish that were a huge success last year, training at the 50m Pool at Kelly College and Open Water Swimming Sessions. With three sports combined at an economical price, Triathlon is a great way to keep fit, meet new people and of course, compete in exhilarating races.

If you are interested in joining one of the friendliest and most inclusive sports clubs on campus be it to race or just for general fitness, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Club overview

Enjoy getting out on the water? Windriders is the club for you. We are Exeter University’s joint club for Wakeboarding, Windsurfing and Kitesurfing. We are a friendly club who welcomes anyone from complete newbies to pros to people who just enjoy getting on the water when the sun’s out. With regular trips around Devon, lessons and socials there’s plenty on offer for everyone throughout the year. We also compete across the country and after nailing both Kitesurfing and Windsurfing nationals last year (and bringing in heaps of BUCS points) we are ready for another year of shredding it in the day and into the night. Looking forward to meeting you at Freshers! Bring on the 2018/2019 season.
