Junior tennis

Exeter Tennis Centre runs a comprehensive children’s coaching programme throughout the year and is regarded as the Premier centre in the Southwest for junior tennis development. Our player pathway caters for all levels of players from beginner to full-time competitors.

Our coaching team strive to deliver fun and engaging sessions within a safe and professional environment, to facilitate the development of junior players at all levels of ability.

Players will experience the LTA Youth programme across all stages of their development from age 5 to 18. We provide expert tuition and all relevant equipment.

Term 1 Timetable

2022 Term 1 Sessions:

Ages 6-7

These sessions use smaller courts, nets and specially designed red tennis balls that are larger, slower, and softer than regular balls. This helps young players to develop their technique and get used to hitting in a controlled and safe environment.

We appreciate that children learn and develop at different rates, so the coaches leading the course will ensure that the session content caters for each child’s ability.

Sessions for this age group will return in Term 2.

Ages 8-9

These sessions use smaller courts, nets and specially designed orange tennis balls that are larger, slower, and softer than regular balls. This helps young players to develop their technique and get used to hitting in a controlled and safe environment.

We appreciate that children learn and develop at different rates, so the coaches leading the course will ensure that the session content caters for each child’s ability.

Junior 10U Beginners:

-        For players new to the sport with little to no pre-existing experience.

-        Players will learn basic tennis skills and concepts through fun games and activities.

Ages 10-11

These sessions use green balls, regular nets, and the full length of the court. Green ball tennis provides players with a realistic feeling of the game, whilst maintaining a controlled and safe environment in which they can develop their technique.

We appreciate that children learn and develop at different rates, so the coaches leading the course will ensure that the session content caters for each child’s ability.

Junior 10+ Beginners:

-        For players that are new to the sport with little to no pre-existing experience.

-       Players will be taught and assessed on the four main skills of tennis (rallying, service, net play and the general rules), whilst also developing key movement and problem-solving skills that can be applied across all sports.

Ages 12-14

These sessions are delivered using yellow balls, regular nets and a full-size court, making them an ideal choice for older children who are new to the game.

We appreciate that children learn and develop at different rates, so the coaches leading the course will ensure that the session content caters for each child’s ability.

Junior Performance Programme

Our Junior Performance Programme runs alongside the Development Programme and provides full-time training and a competition support package for juniors competing at a National Level.

As well to our student high-performance programme, the University of Exeter runs one of the most respected junior performance programmes in Great Britain.

Our streamlined 10-18 player pathway provides full-time tennis and access facilities to juniors who strive to excel and become the best player they can be.

Included

  • 16 hours per week on court training
  • Strength and Conditioning with the University High-Performance Team
  • On-site sports psychology + nutrition support
  • On-site physiotherapy centre
  • National + International tournament support
