Team GB U21 Men's Hockey collecting the silver medal

Scott Strikes Silver

First year Geography student and Hockey Sports Scholar Duncan Scott takes Silver with Team GB in the U21 international tournament The Sultan of Johor Cup held in Malaysia.

Scoring the only goal against Malaysia to secure a 1-0 win in their 1st game, Scott sealed a hatrick against the USA, with Exeter alumni Ben Francis also bagging 2. This led GB to an emphatic 11-0 win. Facing Australia in the next match Scott was on the score board again taking the winning goal from a penalty corner in the final 3 minutes, with GB securing a 4-2 win in a closely contested encounter. GB carried on their impressive record to make it 4 from 4 after beating Japan 3-1.

With a place in the final riding on the game against India GB, were first on the scoreboard but India levelled the score going into half time. Although only needing a draw to progress to the final GB went for the win and scored their 2nd penalty corner to make it 2-1 on the final whistle.

GB faced defending champions Australia in the final in a battle for the title. Having taken the loss in the group stages to GB, Australia came out fighting from the off and showed why they had the best penalty corner conversion rate of the tournament to go 1-0 up. Despite a lot of possession for England it was Australia who found the back of the goal and took the win and tournament title 2-0.

As well as coming home with the silver medal Duncan Scott finished the tournament as top scorer for GB and was named alongside 2 other Team GB members in the team of the tournament.

Reflecting on the tournament Duncan commented “Playing in the Sultan of Johor Cup was a fantastic experience and although we are obviously disappointed not to take the title I think we played some good hockey and showed what we can do on the world stage”.

High Performance Manager (Sport) Charlotte Hale added “It’s great to see so many of our current hockey Sports Scholars and alumni representing GB internationally. Congratulations to Duncan on his performance over the tournament and we look forward to continuing to support his hockey ambitions whilst he is at University”.
