Hockey scholars prove their worth in England Hockey U21s fixtures
University of Exeter Hockey sports scholars play key role in successful England U21 fixtures against the USA and Austria.
Meg Crowson, Sam Hooper, Daniel Jackson and Will Carter-Keall have spent the Easter period with England Hockey U21s with all three male sports scholars finishing their tour with Great Britain Development Programme selection.
Meg Crowson played a 4 game test series against USA U21s at the home of English Hockey in Bisham Abbey. They ran out eventual winners of the series with scores of a 3-1 win, 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 draw which is the first set of matches as a squad this year. Meg commented on the series and said that “It is a fantastic start to our journey towards the European Championships in August, something we are all training very hard for whilst studying for our degrees.”
Sam Hooper, Daniel Jackson and Will Carter-Keall all travelled to Vienna with the England U21 squad over the weekend of 15, 16 and Monday 17 April. They played three matches against Austria over the weekend, Will Carter-Keall said “We played 3 games and had training across the weekend, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday winning all 3 games 2-0, 3-0, and 7-1. This was the last part of our trial for the Great Britain Development Squad and having had the feedback that we have all been selected is a huge achievement and something we all had our sights set on. We have been working hard all year and now can set our sights on the summer competition and training.”
Director of Hockey Chris McInroy praised the students saying “Well done to Sam , DJ and CK on their selection for England under 21 and the GB development squad. Good reward for the hard work they put in this season. Well done also to Duncan Scott who will be joining us in September on his selection and to Meg Crowson on being selected again for the girls.” It is an outstanding achievement that our scholars now have and can be credited to their hard work and willingness to push themselves during their sessions within our High Performance Programme at the University during the competitive season.
