Meg Crowson
England Under 21 call-up for high performance hockey student.
Meg Crowson, a third year Sport and Health Sciences student, has been named in the England Women’s Under 21 squad to compete in the Junior World Cup in Chile, starting on the 24th November.
Also named in the squad is Kathryn Lane who graduated in 2016 from the University of Exeter Business School. Kathryn captained the Women’s 1st team through to the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship finals in 2016 and was an integral part of the sports scholarship and hockey programmes between 2013 and 2016.
The Junior World Cup features the 16 best women’s under 21 teams in the world with England being drawn in Pool C alongside hosts Chile, Australia and South Africa. Meg recently competed in the 5 Nations tournament in Valencia for the Under 21 team and finished as the tournament’s leading scorer.
She said: “It's an honour to be given the opportunity to represent England at the Junior World Cup. It is the biggest tournament I've played in and it will be a fantastic experience to compete at this level.”
Meg is part of the University of Exeter High Performance Programme and Sports Scholarship Scheme, in which exceptionally talented student athletes are provided with a comprehensive package of support and financial benefits. This includes state-of-the art training facilities, expert coaching, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, sports massage, sports science services and video analysis.
Many graduating scholars have progressed to a professional level in their chosen sport and have represented their respective countries on the global stage.
Regarding the programme, Meg said: “The High Performance Strength & Conditioning support has been brilliant. The University and High Performance Team have been very supportive and helped me balance my studies alongside all my training commitments.”
Charlotte Hale, High Performance Manager, said: “It’s brilliant to see current and former students playing sport at an international level. Being selected for their country is evidence of the hard work and dedication put in by Meg and Kathryn over the last few years.”
After competing at the Junior World Cup this month, Meg has ambitions to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games in 2020. The University wishes her all the best in the upcoming tournament and on her future goals.
Hockey is one of 9 focus sports at the University and is ranked as one of the best in the country. Exeter finished 5th overall in the 2015/16 BUCS Championships.
