Athletic Union
The Athletic Union, or AU as it is more commonly known, is the organisation responsible for administrating all aspects of Sports Club activity at the University of Exeter. This includes competitive fixtures, recreational pursuits and local, regional, national and international competition.
We are here to cater for the sporting needs of all Exeter students, running 49 Sports Clubs which have a cumulative membership of in excess of 5,000 students. An additional 3000 students take part in intramural sport and sports volunteering in the local community. The 49 sports clubs are open to all students, whether you are a future Olympian or interested in trying a sport for the very first time. Clubs range from the more traditional Hockey, Rugby and Cricket to the more unusual Speleology, Jui-Jitsu and Sub Aqua; there really is something for everyone!
There are 4 members of staff based in the Athletic Union Office:
Charlotte Raymont is the Athletic Union Manager and is responsible for ensuring the successful running of the Athletic Union.
Catherine White, as Finance and Insurance Administrator, manages all budgets and insurance policies.
Simon Tyson is responsible for running the Intramural Sports programme, the Sports Volunteering Scheme, Internationalisation and Alumni Initiatives.
Megan Russell administers the Intramural Sports programme and the Sports Volunteering Scheme.
Beth Hampson is the current sabbatical Athletic Union President and represents the student body on all sporting matters. In addition, a voluntary Executive Committee of students meet weekly during term time to discuss current student sporting issues.
Many of our sports clubs compete in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sports) competition. These are the inter-university fixtures into which we enter a large number of teams and individuals each year. In the 2010/11 academic year, Exeter finished in 8th position in the final BUCS rankings of 146 Higher Education institutions.
The AU also organises a number of events throughout the year including a number of 'Varsity' matches and the renowned AU Dinner.
