Topping the tables- Focus Sports Regional and National League standings

Taking stock mid-season 3 of our focus sports (Men’s Hockey, Netball and Men’s Rugby) have their respective Regional and National league titles and promotion in sight.

The Exeter University Men’s Hockey National League side who compete in the Conference West are 3 points clear at the top of the table with just 2 losses in the 1st half of the season.  They start the 2nd half of the season on Sunday 4th February against Havant at home and will be hoping to maintain their place in the league table.

Chris McInroy, Director of Hockey and Simon Tyson, Men’s 1st team coach summarised “We've made a good start to the season and were pleased to go into the Christmas break at the top of the England Hockey Western Conference. We know that there's a long way to go this season and we're going to need to perform consistently over the coming months to retain top spot. On an individual level, it's also great to see a number of both our male and female players given international call-ups. All are fully deserved and are a testament to the quality of the University's hockey programme”.

Exeter Netball Club Regional 1 side are currently sitting 2nd in the Netball South West Regional 1 league with promotion in sight. An 8 goal victory over Aquarians in the final game before Christmas was crucial and a 1st for the club having narrowly missed out in previous seasons.  The Regional 3 side are having a fantastic first season in Regional 3 South and are also 3rd in the table with a game in hand. With both sides needing to continue their run of consistent form post Christmas in order to maintain their league positons Exeter Netball Club are back training hard for the rest of the season.

Denise Ellis, Head of Student Netball and Exeter Netball Club Regional 1 coach commented “Both sides have had a great start to the season and it’s been great to see consistent performances from Regional 1 and Regional 3 flourishing in their 1st season at this level. The challenge now is maintaining this for the rest of the season “.

In their 1st season in the Tribute South West 1 Division Exeter University Men’s Rugby side are looking to push on to secure National League status in the 2018-2019 season. At the top of the table with 14 wins from 15 games and 13 points clear of nearest rivals Drybrook, Exeter have made a strong start to their debut season in this league.

Keith Fleming, Director of Rugby and Richard Hodges assistant coach commented “As a coaching team, we are pleased with our league position going into the second half of the season. We have given ourselves a great opportunity to push for National League status. However, we need to continue to stay focused and take one game at a time”.

With University students finishing their exams this week all of our focus sports will be preparing for their first BUCS fixtures and BUCS knockouts alongside their Regional and National league season.
