Children's tennis

Exeter Tennis Centre runs a comprehensive children’s coaching programme throughout the year. Our expert coaches can help children of all ages and abilities through various group sessions. Players will experience age and abilitiy relevant equipment and courts sizes with softer balls / smaller rackets and reduced court sizes. We also run a variety of pay and play sessions to help your child get on court and meet other players. We also run Holiday coaching in the School Holidays.

Tots

Co-ordination, agility and movement are the key themes of this group for children aged 2-4. Lots of games and team activities make this a great way for tots to make new friends whilst learning alongside their parent/guardian who'll be on court too.

You don't need any specialist kit. We can provide rackets and all the tennis equipment. Just bring comfortable sports clothing and plenty to drink.

Ages 5-8

These sessions use smaller courts and nets, and specially designed red tennis balls that are larger, slower and softer than regular balls, helping young players aged 5-8 to develop their technique and get used to hitting in a controlled and safe environment.

We appreciate that children learn and develop at different rates, so the course is split into beginner, improver and performer groups (players who meet the required standard for performer programmes will be invited by the Tennis Office or recommended for progression by their coach).

Further information regarding courses will be updated as soon as possible. We thank you for your cooperation.

Ages 8-9

The perfect next step for those progressing from Mini Red, or for children aged 8-9 years who are just starting out, Mini Orange has three different levels to help aid development: Beginners, Improvers and Performers (players who meet the required standard for performer programmes will be invited by the Tennis Office or recommended for progression by their coach). These sessions use a slightly larger court than Mini Red sessions and a special Mini Orange ball that is softer and slower than an adult ball.

Like our Mini Red sessions, Mini Orange is designed to foster an enjoyment of tennis whilst teaching four key elements of the game: rallying, service, volleying and rules and competition. Players will also be taught key movement skills as well as how to mentally approach points, the importance of focus, and creating basic tactics.

Ages 9-10

Mini Green Tennis provides players aged 9-10 with a platform to prepare themselves for the full game. Playing on the full court for the first time, Mini Green players use green balls, which are only one step away from the full-speed yellow ball. Split into three levels - Beginner, Improver and Performer - our Mini Green programme caters to children of all ability levels.

Following on from Mini Orange, Mini Green players will be taught and assessed on the four main skills of tennis (rallying, service, net play and the general rules of the sport), whilst also developing key movement and problem solving skills that can be applied to all sports.

Ages 11-13

Ideal for older children (aged 11-13) who are new to the game, or for those who have progressed through the ranks of our scheme, Junior Tennis uses the full court and adult balls to introduce full tennis to players for the first time. There are three levels within Junior tennis - Beginners, Improvers and Performers - which allow players to progress through courses and learn with players of a similar standard and knowledge.

Our coaching team deliver fun, exciting and safe sessions to help junior players at all levels to develop together, incorporating coaching, games and matchplay. Sessions will be varied to focus on all the key areas of tennis including the development and improvement of forehand, backhand, volley, service, positioning and tactics.
