Freya Davies - Western Storm

Storming Away With it!

Bidding to reach Finals Day for a fourth consecutive season, Storm completed the double over Lightning and now boast a 100 per cent record from four games in 2019.

Western Storm have been in fine form following on from their training and preparations held at the University of Exeter sports facilities. Having now played 4 and won 4, Western Storm sit a-top of the Women’s Kia Super League table. Their most recent game finished with Storm beating Loughborough Lighting by 40 runs, and the player of the game went to our very own Alumni Freya Davies who picked up an amazing 4/27 in her spell last night. Freya now joins her team mate Claire Thomas as the highest wicket takers this year! We were lucky enough to catch up with Freya on campus, post-delivery of a Little Trooper Cricket Camp she was helping to coach:

How is post-grad life?

It’s definitely different but really exciting, it’s nice to be able to focus 100% on cricket and really see where I can get with that

What does it feel like coming back to your old stumping (pun intended) ground?

It was pretty weird when we first turned up, a mixture of I’ve never left and I’ve been gone forever, but it’s really nice to be back somewhere I know so well and the facilities are great

Have you learnt any good lessons in post-grad life that you can share with us?

Probably just that anything is possible if you work hard, 5 years ago I certainly didn’t think I would have a law degree and a full England contract.

You are a capped international player now, what is your goal moving forwards?

Just to keep fighting for my place in the team, it’s obviously a very competitive squad at the moment so just working hard to keep earning more caps. Got half an eye on the T20 World Cup in Australia in February as that would be an amazing opportunity to be involved in.

Do you have any advice to any of the young players thinking about university and Exeter?

I mean I’m biased obviously I think everyone should come here, I hope if nothing else I prove that you can do both, you don’t need to pick between the sport you love and a great education and I think Exeter balances that really well, it certainly worked for me.

Western Storm’s next match is tomorrow (15th August) against Yorkshire Diamonds at 14:30 and is sure to be another exciting match leading up to the finals at the end of the month.
