Duncan Scott and the Men's European Indoor Hockey Championships team
Exeter represent at European Indoor Hockey Championships
With the Men’s and Women’s European Indoor Hockey Championships taking place in January, Exeter had current University students and Sports Scholars representing in both events.
Receiving her 1st senior international cap current Sports Scholar and final year Exercise and Sport Sciences student Meg Crowson was part of the women’s bronze medal winning side. Meg lined up alongside Exeter alumnae, former 1st team captain Kathryn Lane who was also in the squad and is now centrally contracted with England Hockey following her graduation.
England women made it through to the final pool stage, having finished 2nd in their initial pool. A 4-1 win over Croatia with a hatrick from Meg in that game, helped England to secure the Bronze medal, despite losing out 3-0 to eventual champions Belgium.
Reflecting on her 1st senior international experience Meg commented “As a team we improved game after game, constantly learning and developing throughout the tournament. The progress we made across the weekend was great and we are delighted to finish as bronze medallists! It was a fantastic experience and one I won’t forget!”
Duncan Scott stepped up from the England U21 squad to make the senior men’s side for the competition. England faced Croatia, Sweden and Italy in their initial pool games . Hotly contested encounters resulted in a 2-3 loss to Croatia and a 4-4 against Sweden, with nothing separating the 2 sides, similarly in their final pool game England lost out to Italy 3-2. Despite finishing 8th overall in the competition this was a significant development opportunity for a young squad with no previous indoor experience.
Following the competition Duncan commented “Playing in the European Indoors for the men’s seniors was a fantastic opportunity and I hope to take that experience forward into the rest of the season”.
With Hockey as one of the University’s 9 focus sports on the High Performance Programme the University of Exeter Men’s Hockey 1st team have already secured the BUCS Hockey 2017-2018 South A title and are currently sitting top of the conference west division of the men’s national hockey league. Similarly the University of Exeter Women’s Hockey 1st team have won the BUCS Hockey 2017-2018 South A league. Both men’s and women’s hockey now look toward the initial stages of the BUCS Championship knockout competition.
