Laney representing University of Exeter Women's Hockey 1st team in BUCS
Call for the Commonwealths-Former Sports Scholar Kathryn Lane selected for England hockey
Former Sports Scholar and University of Exeter Women's Hockey 1st team captain Kathryn Lane (Laney) has been named in the England Hockey squad who will be looking to fight for gold in April.
Laney started her 1st graduate role in a recruitment company on graduating from the University of Exeter with a 2:1 in BA Business and Marketing with Spanish. However the opportunity arose to go full time with England hockey when senior trials came out after the junior World Cup which was too good to miss and Laney has been part of the full time programme ever since.
Having previously captained the England U21 side who finished 7th at the junior World Cup in Chille Laney has been developing her international experience at senior level. Recently she was part of the England women's indoor squad who took bronze at the European Indoor Hockey Championships alongside current student and Sports Scholar Meg Crowson.
Reflecting on her selection for her 1st Commonwealth Games Laney commented "I'm so excited to be heading out to the Commonwealth Games with Team England. It’s my first senior international tournament so will be an incredibly special one for me. What makes it even more special is that I’ll be out there alongside two other Exeter alumni and close friends Ella Jackson and Ben Francis, both representing Wales in their hockey squad. The fact that there’s 3 of us out there shows how strong Exeter’s hockey programme is and the quality of support we received. Hopefully there will be lots more Exeter alumni at the next Commonwealth Games!"
High Performance Manager (Sport) Charlotte Hale added "During her time at Exeter Laney was a fantastic ambassador for our Sports Scholarship Scheme in balancing England hockey with her academic commitments. She made a significant contribution to the women's 1st team including captaining the side to multiple BUCS Premier South league wins and BUCS Championship Silver in 2016. To be selected for her 1st Commonwealth Games is a fantastic achievement and we would like to wish Laney, Ella and Ben the best of luck with their Commonwealth campaigns"
England Hockey begin their competition on Thursday 5th April and open against South Africa at 5.30am UK time.
