BUCS Medley- Exeter teams fight for BUCS Gold across the Conference, Trophy and Championship

As we head towards the climax of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) season Women’s Lacrosse 4th team, Women’s Rugby 2nd team, Men’s Badminton 1st team, Men’s Waterpolo 1st team and Men’s Hockey 1st team all line up in the bid for BUCS Gold.

In the Western Conference Cup finals held in Swansea on Wednesday 6th March 2019 Women’s Lacrosse 4th team overpowered UWE 1st team 12-6 to complete the league and cup double. A change in the BUCS leagues for the 2019-2020 season means they also earn a well-deserved promotion! Men’s Badminton 1st team had the tough task of facing hosts Swansea University Men’s 1st on their home turf and eventually lost out in an incredibly tight encounter. However taking home the silver medal added to an already successful season having been unbeaten in the league and previously secured promotion to Western 1A alongside Swansea 1st team. Despite a hugely contested game from start to finish the Women’s Rugby 2nd team fell short losing to Bournemouth University Women’s 1st team 24-17.  Reflecting on the season captain Katie Topley commented “It’s been our most successful season as a club so far, commitment to training has been great and the support from coaches has got us to where we are and the final was a platform to show everything we've learnt and developed this year. Obviously we were disappointed not to get the win but we finished the league undefeated and head into the league above for next season”.

Heading to Big BUCS Wednesday held in Nottingham on Wednesday 27th March 2019 are Men’s Waterpolo 1st team and Men’s Hockey 1st team.  Men’s Waterpolo 1st team finished 2nd in Western 1A losing out to top spot to University of Bristol Men’s 2nd team despite having a higher goal difference. However they have made it all the way through to the BUCS trophy final to face University of Nottingham Men’s 1st  in a bid to be crowned BUCS Champions. Also representing Exeter at the finals are the Men’s Hockey 1st team who line up in the BUCS Championship final against Durham University Men’s 1st. Top of the picking in the BUCS Hockey South A league and having come through the semi-final against Nottingham Trent Men’s 1st 3-2, Exeter will be hoping to replicate their 2011-2012 BUCS triumph. As the only University side competing in the Premier division of the Men’s Hockey league Exeter will be hoping to use this experience to take the BUCS title. In the words of captain Will Carter-Keall, “Winning BUCS Gold at Nottingham will be the perfect end to the season”.

Best of luck to all teams competing in Big BUCS Wednesday and don’t forget to Bleed Green!
