Women's Cricket team win BUCS Indoor Super 8s Championship
Wednesday 16 March – otherwise known as “Big BUCS Wednesday” – saw the Women’s Indoor Cricket team head to Sheffield Hallam to play against Loughborough in the Super 8s final. The game was played at a high intensity throughout, with Exeter winning several key moments on their way to an impressive 5 wicket victory over Loughborough.
Following some impressive earlier performances, including a strong win over Durham in the semi-finals, the Exeter team were keen to carry this momentum into what was expected to be a close-fought final.
The game was played using a two-innings-per-side format. Loughborough batted first, scoring 107 from their ten overs despite some competitive fielding. Exeter then passed Loughborough in their first innings, thanks in part to scholar and Team Captain Amara Carr, who scored 25 runs. Loughborough then entered the second innings with a deficit of 14 runs, and some impressive bowling from Exeter limited them to 85 runs. Exeter needed 72 to win, which was achieved inside 6.3 overs. Carr scored another 25 runs before retiring, while fellow scholar Aylish Cranstone was chosen as Player of the Match by the officials.
Coach Trevor Griffin said, “This is a fantastic and well-earned result for the team. They have worked hard over Winter to prepare and it was great to see them demonstrating everything they have been practicing. They dominated the match from the start and I was really impressed.”
Cricket is one of the University’s nine focus sports and the University will host the Women’s Cricket Super League as part of a South West consortium from 2016.
