History of Exeter Sport

We are very proud our long-standing reputation for sport and excellence, and our first sports hall was built in 1967 just 12 years after the creation of the University of Exeter.

In 1978 St Luke’s College was incorporated and merged with the University of Exeter bringing with it a strong reputation for sport and in particular rugby.

In 1999 Topsham Sports Ground was purchased after the sale of the University grass pitches of Gras Lawn in the centre of Exeter. This followed soon after by the creation of the Sports Office in 2000 and the appointment of our first Director of Sport along with the commitment to provide improved Sports experience.

Since the creation of the Sports Office we have achieved and maintained a top team BUCS ranking and have developed a range of superb sports facilities and services.
