LTA Level 1 Coach Assistant Qualification

The LTA Level 1 Coach Assistant Qualification is an introduction to tennis coaching, aimed at learners who are enthusiastic about tennis and want to become involved in delivering Mini Tennis. The Level 1 course is 100% court-based, and all activities within the course take place either on court or at court side.

What you will learn

The course programme will teach you how to:

  • Motivate and inspire others to play tennis.
  • Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Organise tennis activities constructively and safely.
  • Plan and deliver a structured lesson using Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Level 1 coaching assistant resources.
  • Have basic knowledge of tactics, techniques and rules of tennis
  • Have a full understanding of the structure of LTA Mini Tennis.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to attend this course, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age on the first day of the course.
  • Have an active interest and involvement in tennis.
  • Provide evidence of a satisfactory enhanced LTA Criminal Records Bureau disclosure within the last 12 months or have a letter of deployment from the club you will be working with; this can be obtained from the course providers.

Exemptions: If you hold a UKCC endorsed 1st4sport awarded Level 2 in another sport you can bypass Level 1 and take Level 2 OR if you hold a teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) specialising in P.E. then you can bypass Level 1 and take Level 2

LTA Level 2 Coach Assistant Qualification

The LTA Level 2 Coach Assistant Qualification is aimed at tennis coaching assistants who want to improve their coaching skills and be able to work with groups of beginners on their own under the umbrella programme of a licensed coach.

It will build on the skills learnt on the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Tennis (QCF) and will expand your knowledge of working with groups of players in different environments. It will also focus on running short-format competitions that will allow beginners to enjoy competing.

What you will learn

On successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Tennis (QCF), you will be able to:

  • Organise competitions for groups of beginners.
  • Coach groups of beginners using differentiated equipment.
  • Plan and deliver linked and progressive lessons.
  • Give advice on tactical and technical improvement for beginners in Mini Tennis.

Entry requirements

The UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Tennis (QCF) is designed for you if you are over 16 years of age and hold all of the following qualifications:

  • Hold the Level 1 Coach Assistant Qualification OR the LTA Tennis Assistants OR hold a 1st4sport Level 2 certificate in coaching another sport with UKCC endorsement.
  • Be LTA Accredited or hold a DBS check through the LTA less than 12 months old
  • Hold a valid certificate of competence in either First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), or will have successfully completed the OFQUAL Level 2 in First Aid

Exemptions: If you have or previously had an ATP or WTA singles or doubles world ranking you can bypass the Level 2 Coaching Assistant course and instead take the Level 3 qualification, (you must have successfully completed the Level 1 Assistant Coach course).

LTA Level 3 Coach Qualification

The LTA Level 3 Coach Qualification is for people who want to work full time within the tennis coaching profession. On successful completion of the coach qualification candidates will be able to:

  • Coach beginners and improvers in groups and as individuals.
  • Understand the basics of business management.
  • Understand the competitive structure in the UK.
  • Manage the work of level 1 and 2 coaching assistants.

 Course structure

The course is 14 days broken down into 4 modules of 3 days plus 2 assessment days. The breaks between modules will be 4-6 weeks to allow coaches time to undertake 27 hours of coaching experience.

Module one:

Days 1,2 & 3

  • Coaching process.
  • Observation and analysis.  
  • Coaching skills.
  • Planning.

4-6 week break for a minimum of 9 hours coaching experience with an LTA licensed coach.

Work on portfolio.

Module two:

Days 4,5 & 6 

  • Technical development.
  • Stages of learning.  
  • Communication and organisation.
  • Mental skills.  
  • Business management.

4-6 week break for a minimum of 9 hours coaching experience with an LTA licensed coach.

Work on portfolio.

Module three:

Days 7,8 & 9 

  • Disability awareness.
  • Behaviour management.
  • Teaching progressions.
  • Group coaching.
  • Competition.

4-6 week break for a minimum of 9 hours coaching experience with an LTA licensed coach.

Completion of portfolio. 

Module four:

Days 10,11& 12

     
  • Formative assessment.

Summative   Assessment: Day 13 & 14

The course is assessed in two areas:

  • On court practical coaching assessment of group and individual lessons  
  • Portfolio of evidence to be completed by day 10 .

Candidates must attend all the sessions on the course and pass all elements of the assessment criteria to be successful.

  • Hold the level 2 coaching assistant certificate/ECA/ETTC
  • Be LTA registered or have undergone a criminal record in the last 12 months. Please note it may take up to eight weeks for the criminal record  check to be processed and you must be in receipt of the criminal record check upon booking. 
  • Have (or have had) a rating of 6.1 or a play test grade 1.
  • Hold a valid certificate of competence in either First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), or will have successfully completed the OFQUAL Level 2 in First Aid.

LTA Level 4 Senior Club Coach Qualification

The Level 4 Senior Club Coach qualification is aimed at coaches who will either be managing a section of a commercial club or running a team of coaches in a park or a members' club. On successful completion of the senior club coach qualification coaches will be able to:

  • Manage a team of coaches.
  • Working effectively with tennis participants from mini tennis red to adult competition.
  • Understand advanced tactical and technical skills.

  • 5 modules of 3 days plus 2 assessment days

  • Hold either the Level 3, Club Coach, Performance Coach, DCA or a non LTA qualification awarded with NVQ Level 2 in Coaching Teaching and Instructing Tennis.
  • Be an LTA Accredited+ Coach.
  • Have (or have had) a rating of 5.1 or below a Play Test grade 2.
  • Coaching experience will be required as agreed with the course tutors.

Emergency First Aid at Work

This is the Ofqual and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approved Emergency First Aid at Work course, which complies in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The Emergency First Aid at Work (AFAW) certificate permits the holder to be employed as a First Aider in the workplace in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The course delivered at the University Sports Park is a sport specific course and is designed to help diagnose and treat specific sport injuries.

Additional Qualifications

LTA Mini Tennis CPD

This is a new 6 hour workshop is developed by the LTA and its network for Coach Education Centres and tutors. It is aimed at coaches who deliver Mini Tennis sessions and coaches who lead Mini Tennis Programmes. To book onto the course coaches must have an LTA Level 2 qualification or above.

The workshop trains coaches to deliver dynamic sessions by suggesting an easy to use session structure, a range of organisational formats and loads of ideas to keep kids active and engaged in their learning. In addition the workshops covers some ideas on technical and tactical development and competition.

Coaches attending the course will receive a resource pack which includes a new range of videos which bring the course content to life and 6 CPD credits. The course is very practical so please wear appropriate clothing.

Cardio Tennis Workshop

This course qualifies you to deliver Cardio Tennis at your venue.  A fun, sociable, group fitness class set to music, suitable for all ages and abilities.

By the end of the course coaches will be able to attract and retain players by delivering Cardio Tennis to a wide range of players with different tennis abilities and fitness levels.

The 6 hour course will cover the structure of a Cardio Tennis class, and effective promotion. The course is very practical so all coaches will have an opportunity to experience participating and delivering elements of a Cardio Tennis class.

In order to book, as a minimum you must have one of the following qualifications and accreditations:

  • Tennis coaches: An LTA Accredited Level 2 Coaching Assistant or above.
  • Fitness instructors:  REPs Level 2 or above.
  • PE teachers: A qualified and active secondary school teacher.

Yogi Tennis

Building strength and flexibility whilst returning tennis bodies back to a balanced state.  

We take a look at common tennis injuries and what contributes towards their cause, view a physical training programme from a different perspective, experience pilates and yoga based strength and flexibility exercises and discuss ideas as to how we can incorporate this into our training programmes.

Disability Awareness Course

The Disability Awareness Course is delivered by LTA Coach Education Centres, and covers the key information and skills required to be a coach who can deliver tennis sessions to all.

The course will inform coaches of the specific impairment groups (Wheelchair, Visually Impaired, Deaf and Learning Disabilities), the implications for working with these impairment groups individually and in integrated sessions, and how to deliver sessions accordingly. Practical elements include participation in ‘disability simulation’ to allow coaches to experience the challenges faced by disabled people, followed by an opportunity to coach individuals with impairment.

The DAC forms part of the Level 3 course, but limited spaces are open to coaches wishing to attend the day. The course is open to registered Level 2 Coaching Assistants and above, and licensed coaches will be given 6 LTA license points.
