Throughout the year, St Luke's Indoor Pool hosts a range of swimming teacher qualifications including ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) and ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher. 

ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching)

How to become a swimming teacher or coach

The ASA/UKCC level one is the first step towards becoming a swimming teacher or coach. Once qualified, the holder will be able to assist teaching of a limited range of basic skills under the supervision of a qualified UKCC Teacher / Coach.

The ASA / UKCC qualifications have replaced the ASA Swimming Teachers qualifications.

Candidates must be 16 years or older at the start of the course.

Overview

The ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification is a practical qualification, which develops the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be a Swimming Assistant (Teaching).

Assessment

This qualification is made up of a series of learning outcomes and assessment criteria. Assessment is through the completion of a series of tasks set by the ASA Awarding Body. The purpose of assessment is to ensure that effective learning has taken place to give learners the opportunity to achieve the learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

To achieve this qualification:
• All learning outcomes must be achieved
• All assessment criteria must be achieved
• All evidence produced by the learner must be their own, and in English

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts:
1. Theoretical questions
2. Observation record
3. Review record

This qualification is not graded. Learners will either meet the requirements and pass or will not meet the requirements and be referred. The course syllabus can be found on the ASA website.

ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher Qualification

How to become a Swimming Teacher or Coach

This is the industry standard qualification for people to teach or coach unsupervised and is essential for employment as a swimming teacher.

Once qualified, the holder can teach groups of a range of abilities using the ASA National Plan for Teaching or coaching Swimming.

Pre-requisites to becoming a Swimming Teacher or Coach

Candidates must be 17 years of age or older at the start of the course and must hold at least one of the following:

  • ASA/UKCC Level One Certificate for Teaching Aquatics / Coaching
  • ASA Level One Certificate for Teaching Swimming (post 2002).
  • ASA Assistant Teachers Certificate (Swimming) (post September 1994).
  • STA (Swimming Teachers Association) Certificate (post September 1994).

Overview

Assessment is the responsibility of the Tutor/Assessor and will cover the following:

•Practical teaching through the use of observation, oral and/or written and recorded against a checklist of competence related to specific outcomes

•Planning, preparation and other associated tasks

•A selection of group work, presentations, group tasks, worksheets, games and pool work and other activities deemed appropriate by the assessor

•Practical teaching through the use of an observation, oral and/or written and recorded against a checklist of competence related to specific outcomes

Assessment

The ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification is a practical qualification, which develops the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be a Swimming Teacher.

This qualification builds on the knowledge, skills and abilities developed in the ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification. When achieved it ensures swimming teachers can effectively and independently plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate a series of swimming teaching lessons.

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts:

2. Lesson plans

3. Lesson overview

4. Observation record

5. Evaluation

6. Action plan
