Scholarships
The University of Exeter Sports Scholarship Scheme is one of the best in the UK, providing a comprehensive package of support and financial benefits to meet the needs of the individual athlete.
The scheme helps talented student athletes reach their sporting potential. Sports scholars play a key role in maintaining these high standards of achievement competing in the teams and sports which make up the High Performance Programme (HPP).
Sports scholarships are available to students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement at international level.
Numerous graduating scholars have progressed to a professional level in their chosen sport; some of the best have represented their respective countries at Olympic Games and World Championships.
- Alumna Sarah Thomas represented Great Britain in Hockey at the Beijing Olympics.
- Nick Brothers and Ian Haley played in the 2010 Hockey World Cup in Delhi.
- A number of sailing alumni are strong contenders for Olympic selection including Nick Thompson in the Laser class; a further four are involved in Great Britain squads in Olympic disciplines within the Skandia Team GBR.
- Alumni Neil Clark, James Hanks and Haydn Thomas are lead members of the Exeter Chiefs rugby union squad in the Aviva Premiership.
Eligibility
Sports scholarships are available to undergraduate and postgraduate applicants as well as current students.
Every scholar will be assessed at the end of each year and they will have to apply for re-nomination for an award.
The University will make every effort to accommodate your training and performance needs however, in general no dispensation is offered from the normal course requirements in terms of assessment, progression or final degree classification.
Every sports scholar must be a student at the University of Exeter and compete for the University in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) events.
New students
Scholarships are only offered to those applicants who have gained an offer of a place or normal admission to a course on their academic qualifications. No special reduction in entry criteria is offered as part of the scholarship, nor does the offer of a scholarship carry with it an offer of a place.
However, it is not necessary to wait for an offer of a place before submitting your registration of interest.
Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and are subject to satisfactory sporting performance, academic progress and general conduct.
Who can apply?
Emphasis is placed on awarding scholarships in our high performance focus sports:
All of these sports have nationally recognised reputations for competition and excellence at Exeter, along with first-class sports-specific training facilities. For more details please see our HPP pages.
Performers from any sport recognised by the Athletic Union (AU) will be considered. The opportunities for support and bursary funding are not limited to our focus sports.
Please note: athletes can gain selection for a focus sport HPP squad without being a sports scholar.
Studying in Cornwall?
Students applying to study in Cornwall should visit the FXU Students' Union website for further details or email Hanna.Royle@falmouth.ac.uk.
Awards
Sports scholarships are awarded annually and tailored to the needs of the individual. They include a cash sum for sporting expenses up to £2,000 a year for exceptional athletes.
The amount awarded depends on your:
- chosen sport,
- achievements,
- ability and potential to develop during your time at Exeter.
A full package of support services and coaching equating to a cash equivalent upwards of £3,500 is also provided as part of each award.
The sports scholarship scheme is funded centrally by the University High Performance Programme. However, several partners and local and national sponsors also show great generosity by financing several individual scholarships and bursaries.
How to apply?
Online applications will be accepted from October 2012 and need to be submitted by the 31 March 2013 for 2013/14 entry.
Applications for 2012/13 have now closed. However, late applications may be considered after consultation with the University of Exeter Sport High Performance Unit.
The Sports scholarship panel assess all applications and invite short listed athletes to formally apply for the second stage of the scheme's application process at the end of May. This requires a more detailed submission accompanied by two sports specific references.
In most circumstances short-listed applicants will receive an invitation in mid July to attend a sports specific screening at the University during pre-season training in September. A final decision on awards will be made at the beginning of October.
If successful with your application you will be assigned a level of award and notified on what you will need to do next.
For further details on the scheme please contact Dr Harriet Tillson, Sports Performance Administrator on 01392 723759 or email: sportscholarships@exeter.ac.uk.
