Focus Sports

The University of Exeter High Performance Programme offers assistance to top level student athletes in a wide range of sports.

We also manage 9 Focus Sports which receive the very best coaching, sports science services, physiotherapy, athlete lifestyle support and strength and conditioning training. All of our focus sports have a nationally recognised reputation for excellence and hold British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Premier League status, as well as competing in national or regional competitions.

Sports Scholarships are generally given to athletes in these sports while partnership links with key national governing bodies (NGBs) and professional sports clubs offer high level performance pathways for the very best sports men and women.

Performance Cricket

Approximately 14-17 men are selected annually for our High Performance Squad which has access to the following:

  • Three training sessions per week
  • Regular BUCS matches
  • Specialist coaching (individual and group)
  • One Strength and Conditioning session per week plus ‘drop in’ sessions (three per week)
  • Individual video analysis
  • Mentoring for our aspiring student-coaches


Access to a range of support services provided by the High Performance unit including:

  • Strength & Conditioning -access to the High Performance Facilities (ADC) for squad specific sessions and open session access, specific term time and holiday programmes, fitness testing and monitoring.
  • Sports Science support - nutrition, psychology, performance analysis, athlete lifestyle support and an annual fitness testing package.
  • Physiotherapy - subsidised physiotherapy and sports massage, access to weekly physiotherapy triage sessions both provided by Ocean Physio and rehab.
  • Workshops - including employability, nutrition, psychology, student athlete lifestyle management.

Performance Golf

We support a number of R&A golf scholars each year and offer a comprehensive High Performance Programme (HPP) for both male and female golfers. The current HPP squad handicaps range from +2 to 3 with a number holding a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

To enhance the performance of our HPP squad we are looking to recruit both undergraduate and postgraduate students. We aim to recruit men playing off a minimum of +1 and women playing off 2, who preferably hold a WAGR ranking. Eligible students can apply for a Sports Scholarship at the university, which will contribute to both tuition fees and sporting expenses.

Approximately 12 players are selected annually for our High Performance Squad which has access to the following programme and support:

  • Individual management and programme development through University High Performance Golf Manager, Craig Townsend – daily
  • BUCS Southern Premier matches – weekly. BUCS Student Tour and Finals. For information on the BUCS Golf Tour 2016-17 please visit the BUCS website
  • Coaching & technical development administered by a University Golf Coach and delivered on site at the Vic Ambler Golf Centre
  • Regular short game and scoring zone skill challenge sessions – weekly
  • Individual periodised fitness, conditioning & weight training programme – x 2 per week
  • Access to PGA Level 1 & 2 Golf Coaching awards and coaching on junior academies
  • Extensive sport science and psychology support
  • Performance and Biomechanical analysis via the University Golf Coach
  • Full physiotherapy support from England Golf Physio Andy Larmour
  • Full winter training programme and warm weather training based at EGU training venues and Trevose Golf & Country Club, Cornwall (Brabazon Trophy venue 2008)
  • Individual monitoring, performance review and mentoring meetings

We operate a full pre-season training programme from the last weekend in August which includes three sessions, five days per week. Returning performance players as well as those identified from other BUCS teams are invited to attend, as well as incoming first year students of the appropriate standard. If you are short-listed for a Sport Scholarship, you will be expected to attend our pre-season training as the final part of your scholarship screening process.

Performance Netball

Approximately 16 players are selected annually for our High Performance Squad which has access to the following programme and support:

  • Full pre-season training programme
  • Two netball specific court sessions per week
  • BUCS Premier League and South West Regional League matches
  • Specialist coaching including team and unit play
  • Three Strength and Conditioning sessions per week 
  • Weekly video and team analysis sessions
  • Individualised analysis and review meetings
  • Mentoring for our aspiring student-coaches

Performance Rowing

The Rowing High Performance Squad is selected at the beginning of the year and usually is usually made up of 15-20 rowers. 
 
The High Performance Rowing squad has numerous benefits:

  • Water Sessions a minimum of three times a week, access to rowing machines and access to the High Performance Facilities
  • A very high level of coaching from two very experienced and knowledgeable coaches
  • Coached Strength and Condition Training, led by two S&C coaches
  • There is the possibility to trial for the GB U23 or senior team
  • Access to sport science services provided by the High Performance Unit including athlete profiling, physiology, nutrition, psychology, athlete lifestyle support, subsidised physiotherapy and sports massage, access to free weekly physiotherapy triage sessions, annual fitness testing package

The high performance programme is led by the Director of Rowing, Richard Tinkler. Richard coached at Olympic level, and starting coaching at Exeter in 2011. He is assisted by Lorna Tinkler, an ex GB lightweight rower and brings many years of experience and knowledge to the program.



Performance Rugby

The High Performance Programme (HPP) is available to a selected group of 30 top-end athletes, including scholars, playing at first team level. These athletes will be given access to the following programme and support :

  • Three weights sessions a week with strength and conditioning coaches in our Performance Training Facility (PTF)
  • Weekly team and individual video analysis
  • Three rugby sessions per week

Access to a range of support services provided by the High Performance unit including:

  • Strength & Conditioning - access to the High Performance Facilities (ADC) for squad specific sessions and open session access, specific term time and holiday programmes, fitness testing and monitoring
  • Sports Science support - nutrition, psychology, performance analysis, athlete lifestyle support and an annual fitness testing package

  • Workshops - including employability, nutrition, psychology, student athlete lifestyle management

Performance Rugby

Approximately 24 players are selected annually for our High Performance Programme which includes:

  • Two rugby specific sessions per week
  • Two strength and conditioning sessions
  • Regular unit specific sessions
  • Team meetings and video analysis
  • Individual and team analysis and review
  • Mentoring for our aspiring student-coaches

Performance Sailing

The University of Exeter Sailing club has enjoyed success in recent years through a number of the sailing disciplines, from Team Racing to Yacht Racing we are placing consistently high up the BUSA competitions and are aiming to build on this over the next year.

Our High Performance teams include:

  • Team Racing (6 Members)
  • Fleet Racing (16+ Members)
  • Match Racing (3 Members)
  • Yacht Racing (8 Members)

Sailors on the HPP program will have access to:

  • The High Performance Facilities up to twice a week for open session
  • One Strength & Conditioning session per week, run by a member of the HPP team
  • High performance coaching both on and off the water
  • Entry into BUSA final events

Performance Tennis

Tennis at Exeter University has a history of excellence and is one of the University’s Focus Sports. Exeter currently has seven (four men’s, three women’s) British University College Sport (BUCS) teams which compete in the BUCS leagues. Players also have the opportunity to compete in BUCS individuals competitions, the University Tennis Tour, British Tours and ITF events whilst completing their degree.
