With the Wales Hockey squad Commonwealth Games announcement Exeter graduates feature in both the men’s and women’s side with alumnae Women’s 1st team goalkeeper Ella Jackson and alumni Men’s 1st team midfielder Ben Francis heading to their 1st Commonwealth Games.

Ben Francis first made his debut for Wales in 2015 against Scotland as part of a test series and was named in the 2017-2018 Great Britain Hockey Elite Development Programme, an initiative designed to develop potential athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Having also represented GB at U21 level and taken the silver medal in the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2017, alongside current University of Exeter student Duncan Scott as well as representing Wales at senior indoor level, Ben already has significant international playing experience.  A key player for the University of Exeter Men’s Hockey 1st team, whilst studying for his degree in Economics Ben was part of the BUCS Championship Silver winning squad in 2016, with Exeter regularly finishing the BUCS season ranked as the number 1 hockey institution during his time here.  Now playing alongside 3 fellow University of Exeter alumni at Reading in one of the leading Premier League club sides, Ben continues to perform at the highest level.

Ella Jackson made her Welsh Senior debut in the Investec London Cup against South Africa and has gone on to earn 9 caps for her country. Whilst studying for a BSc in Exercise and Sport Sciences at Exeter, Ella was the goalkeeper for the women’s hockey 1st team who won the silver medal in the 2016 BUCS Championship final. Ella currently plays for Buckingham Ladies Hockey club in the Investec Premier division of the Investec Women’s Hockey League.

High Performance Manager (Sport) Charlotte Hale commented “It’s great to see two Exeter hockey High Performance Programme alumni heading to the Commonwealth Games. Other than the Olympics clearly this is one of the biggest international multi-sport competitions and to have Exeter represented is brilliant. Ben and Ella should be very proud of their latest international selections and all of us at University of Exeter Sport will be following their progress out on the Gold Coast.

The 2018 Commonweath Games begins on Wednesday 4th April and concludes on Sunday 15th April. Wales Women’s Hockey kick off their campaign against India and Wales Men’s Hockey start against Pakistan on Thursday 5th April.  Coverage of the Commonwealth Games will be on the BBC who look to cover up to 200 hours across, TV, radio and online, with 24 hour viewing available via the BBC Red Button.
