EUWRFC represent in England Women’s Rugby Six Nations Training Squad

The England Women’s Rugby Six nations 35-man training squad was recently announced and includes three Exeter Sport Scholars Lagi Tuima, Poppy Leitch and Caity Mattinson, as well as alumnae Amber Reed.

After a full week of training at Bisham Abbey, the final squad will be chosen this week before England begin defence of their 2017 grand slam title in their first match of the Six Nations Championship against Italy on Sunday 4th February.

After 2 months playing premiership rugby with Bristol Ladies at the start of the 2017/18 season, current Sports Scholar and BSc Exercise and Sports Science student Lagi Tuima was called up to the England squad and received her first senior cap against Canada in November 2017.  Lagi commented “I’m really excited for my first experience of the senior six nations. The autumn internationals were a great learning curve for me and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my rugby alongside some senior England players”.

Sports Scholar and new Exeter addition Caity Mattinson also made her England senior international debut in November 2017 whilst studying for her Master’s degree in Sport and Health Sciences.  Caity said “Being part of the six nations training squad has been a great opportunity for me and I’m honoured to get the call up for the opening game vs Italy.  Hopefully we can start our campaign strongly to retain our grand slam title from last year”.

BSc Exercise and Sport Science student and Sports Scholar Poppy Leitch has featured in six test matches for England at senior level so far and is looking forward to being back with the squad; “It’s great for me to be back in the mix with the senior side for the 6 nations. We’ve been working hard in camp in preparation for the first fixtures and I’m looking forward to the competition getting underway”.

Also selected in the training squad is Exeter alumnae Amber Reed who captained the University BUCS gold winning side in 2013.  Amber was part of England Women’s Rugby World Cup winning squad in 2014 and also competed in every game at last year’s Six Nations Championship.

Jo Yapp, Head of Women’s Rugby at University of Exeter and current England U20s head coach commented, 'It is great to see the girls being recognised for their efforts.  They have all worked so hard and are great roles models for the other students at Exeter University"

All the girls also play for Bristol Ladies who currently sit 4th in the table for the Tyrells Premier 15s league.  Bristol Ladies provides high quality training and competition at Premiership level which enables the girls to compete regularly at the top level while studying in Exeter.

EUWRFC have one game left to play in the BUCS Premier South League and currently sit in second place, which puts them in a strong position moving into the knock out rounds which will commence later this month.
