EUBC in action

Medals for EUBC in BUCS

The British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Regatta was held on 2-4 May in Nottingham and it is the culmination of the BUCS rowing season, with every university competing.  Exeter University Boat Club took 71 athletes to compete in 31 events over the 3 days with some racing up to 11 times across the weekend.

This was a chance for Exeter students to make their mark after hard months of winter training and a very successful training camp to Libourne, France.  All of the training and early starts paid off as it was the most successful regatta to date with an impressive 15 crews making the A finals in their events.

Medals were won by Hannah Traylen and Jess Elkington who got Gold in the Lightweight Double which has led to them qualifying for the European Universities Sports Association (EUSA) in September.  Isabel Cole and Seun Olusanya won Silver in the Intermediate Pair whilst Kitty Taylor, Daisy Gresswell, Livvy Moorey and Georgia Drinkwater achieved Bronze in their Lightweight Quad.

Exeter finished overall 9th in the VL with the Women’s Squad coming 4th and as a club gaining more BUCS points than ever before. It was a tough but successful weekend for everyone involved. There were many great achievements however, notable mentions must go to:

The Novice Squad for their highest placing ever with

-Mens 8+ and 4+ making the A final

-Womens 4+ making the B final

-Mens 1x making the B final

The Heavy Men’s squad for making more A finals than ever before with

                -Champ 4+ coming 4th

-Inter 4x making the A final

The Women’s squad achieving all round with

                -Champ 4+ coming 4th

                -All lightweights making A final

The students worked tirelessly to ensure they were all at the top of their game going into the event and were well supported by the coaching team of Richard Tinkler, Lorna Tinkler and Harry Townsend.

George Butcher, Club Captain, said “It was great to see success across all four squads this year, each squad improved upon their results from last year. In particular the Novice Men produced the best ever results for Exeter. Moving up to two A finals – a fantastic result – one which we have never done before. A massive thank you must also go to High Performance for all the support they have given throughout the year as well as to Andy Adams, Pete Burridge and Wayne Pattinson, for running our S&C program. ”

It was a tough but successful weekend for everyone involved. With exams finishing in a few weeks the Boat Club can now look forward to Metropolitan and Marlow Regatta with Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta on the horizon.
