The men's winners of the tournament

LTA British Tennis Tour Grade 2 event

The tournament is part of the LTA British Tour (Tier 2) schedule and is one level below the step on the rung of World Ranking events.  The tournament was open to players with world rankings and was over-subscribed with players.

Will McNally, Director of Tennis at the University’s Tennis Centre commented, “Hosting this tournament reiterates our commitment to excellence in tennis and it was great to see some highly competitive tennis on show. Indeed players from Exeter Tennis Centre competed with sterling effort and reflects how hard our players work.”

Exeter Tennis Centre entered 25 players into the tournament’s qualifying rounds with some excellent individual achievements. Jon Nather, David Woon, Andy Higham and coach Steve Wood made it through pre-qualifying with Andy and Steve just missing out on the main draw in hard fought games.

In the Women’s draw Summer Colling and Emily Crowe made it through to the main draw, with number 5 seed Emily suffering with Tonsillitis which hampered her first round game. Summer battled hard and played some amazing Tennis but lost in three sets.

The men’s event was one by Andrew Bettles, number one seed, defeating Evan Hoyt in the final 0-6, 6-4, 6-0. Andrew only lost one set all tournament!

The women’s event saw Grace Dixon, number seven seed and Ceire Mullins meet in the final with Grace producing a great all round tournament to win 6-4, 6-4.

“‘I’m delighted to see so many fantastic players competing this year; in particular it was great to see so many players from Exeter putting their tennis skills to the test against some of the best players in the country.” Explained Will McNally, “Our Junior performance players are putting in strong displays and our Community Development programme for children is proving to be a real hit. Hosting these tournaments give all our players something to aspire to and really does demonstrate our commitment to excellence.”
