Bradbury wins Welsh Amateur title

University of Exeter Golf Scholar Katie Bradbury has taken her first Welsh Ladies Open title in style at Monmouthshire Golf Club on 20 May.

The second year Accounting and Finance student secured the “biggest win of her career” with three birdies from the last three holes, putting her three ahead of defending champion Becky Harris with only two left to play in the match play final.

She commented: “The win was really good and the biggest title I've won so I'm really happy.

“After exams I wasn't expecting to come out on such good form but a win like that puts me in really good stead for the summer.”

Katie, who finished third in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Individuals in April, also continued her rich run of form at the Irish Women’s Open on 25 May, finishing 14th at Douglas Golf Club, Cork, despite being hampered by illness.

The University of Exeter Golf Club first teamer will now prepare for the World University Championships where she has been selected to represent Great Britain alongside fellow Exeter scholar Laurie Potter (MSc International Management).

She added: “These results give me a lot of confidence going into the World University Championships in Switzerland.

“I feel on top of my game at the moment and hopefully this confidence will bring out some good golf over the next few weeks, and we'll be able to bring the medals back from Switzerland.”

The University of Exeter has long cemented itself at the pinnacle of student golf and unveiled the new Vic Ambler Golf Centre at the Sports Park on 15 May.

High Performance Golf Manager Craig Townsend commented: “2014 has already been an outstanding year for Golf at the University, and there is still plenty to look forward to.

“Katie has played consistently well this season, and her focus going into the Worlds is exceptional.

“She knows exactly what she has to do, and I have every confidence that if she continues to play as she is at the moment a medal in Switzerland is a real possibility.”
