The University of Exeter Snooker and Pool club have won every major University title available this year.

Clean Sweep for Snooker and Pool Club in Leeds

The University of Exeter Snooker and Pool Club made history at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) National Snooker Championship, 13-16 March, becoming the first ever University club to win both the Snooker and Pool championships in the same year.

Exeter, who became the BUCS Eight-ball pool champions in February, took three teams to the Leeds event for the first time in their history, the thirds overcoming a 20-frame play-off to secure the final spot in the competition.

A weekend of outstanding performances rounded off an exceptional season for the club who have now won every major University competition they have entered this year.

The first team overcame nine-time BUCS Champions Queen’s University to secure their spot in the final, Midland’s Universities Individual Champion, Jin Foulger edging the side ahead in a tense semi-final frame play-off.

A 3-1 victory against Manchester Met secured the Club’s first ever BUCS Snooker National Championship title victory, simultaneously becoming the first University Club to do the Snooker / Pool double in the same season.

There was also call for further celebration as Nathan Owen escaped several snookers from Kent’s Peter Gambrill in the individual finals to take the title 2-1 and become Exeter’s BUCS Individual Champion since 1998, whilst the thirds took bronze in the team shield event, the seconds also claiming fourth in their tier.

Club captain James Littlefair expressed his delight at the team’s performance this year. He said: “BUCS Snooker 2014 has helped Exeter to further establish themselves as the leading club in the country.

“Nathan Owen was unstoppable in taking the BUCS individual title and the first team have been exceptional all year; Southern Universities Pool Champions, Midlands Universities Snooker Champions, BUCS Eight-ball Pool Champions and now BUCS Snooker Champions means we have taken a clean sweep of all the major titles available and established the class of 2014 in the BUCS cue-sport history.”
