Leah Clarke British Champs

Leah with her British Championships gold medal

Gold for UoE Sport Staff at British Weightlifting Championships

Known as an ever present friendly face in the Russel Seal Fitness Centre, Leah won the title of British Weightlifting Champion and stepped onto the podium after lifting a combined total of 210kg.

The ultimate focus of the competition is a performance-based event for those athletes wishing to either qualify or benchmark their total against others for the Commonwealth Games in 2022; an event we are rooting to see Leah at one day.

Having suffered a potential competition-ending injury only weeks beforehand with a ruptured elbow ligament, Leah worked with Injury Armour based in Taunton and along with her family at Willpower Weightlifting was able to lift the impressive amount to gain her rightful place on the world stage.

Leah said: 'I am grateful for the opportunity to compete at the Live British Championships 2021. I have always wanted to become a British Champion so to have achieved this after 9 years in the sport is something that means a lot to me. My ultimate goal is to qualify for an International competition in the next few years. To represent England on the International stage would be the highest honour and I am working towards making this happen in the immediate future. My club, Willpower Weightlifting and physio Adam Rutter have supported me closely over the last two years to get me through a period of significant injury and setbacks with COVID restrictions. I am excited for the future and would encourage anyone to try strength training as the benefits both mentally and physically are unmatched.'

We’re incredibly proud to be in the presence of such an impressive athlete at the University of Exeter and we continue to wish Leah all the luck for her future.‌
