Bamber helps celebrate winning ways for Middlesex

Summer Smiles in Debut for Bamber

After a busy first year for the sport scholar, including trips with England U19 to South Africa and a World Cup in New Zealand for the whole of January, Ethan had earnt a three year professional summer contract with Middlesex CCC.

Having got his County Championship debut against Northamptonshire, Ethan then got the opportunity to showcase why he was a ‘go-to’ for England U19 with the seam.

It was a First Class Debut and one that will be etched in the memory for Ethan for a long time. It was the classic rivalry between Middlesex & Sussex that gave a second year BA Theology Student the opportunity of a lifetime. Not one for passing opportunities by, Ethan claimed his maiden first-class wicket when bowling centurion Ricardo Vasconcelos in the first innings. Three more followed in the second innings as he proved his worth, allowing Middlesex to win after following on for the first time since 1924.

After talking with Middlesex post game Ethan reflected on his performance and debut: “It was a very special feeling to be asked to play – it’s all still a bit surreal to be honest,” he said.

“I was just warming up doing my stretches in the morning when ‘Mala’ (Dawid Malan) came over and told me that I was in. I came straight up the stairs to text my dad and my brother, who came down to watch, before trying to get in the right place mentally.”

“My first wicket was very special too as I’d bowled quite a lot of dross up to that point and was feeling quite frustrated with myself. There are a lot of injuries at the moment, but generally at a club like Middlesex there is a lot of fast-bowling stock, so I’m really fortunate to have played in this game.

“Obviously, I’d love to nail down a regular spot, but I’ve got a long way to go, so thinking like that is probably dangerous in the sense it’s getting too far ahead of myself.”

With another call up to the Middlesex vs Gloucester which has started today we can only hope that Ethan gets more opportunities to showcase his ability in the English First-Class division and bring the form back with him when the University BUCS season starts.
