Spotlight on Promotional Playoffs-UoE BUCS teams earn 19/20 Premier League spots

With 18 BUCS leagues wins across all BUCS sports for University of Exeter we take a closer look at the teams who have come through playoffs and achieved promotions or retained their position in BUCS Premier Leagues for next season #BleedGreen!

Netball

The Netball 1st team ended the BUCS season undefeated in Western 1A with a goal difference of 380 but remained focused over the Easter break to finish their season on high and return to BUCS Premier South for next year. In the playoffs they faced Cardiff University 1st team who finished bottom of Premier South and University of Surrey 1st team who won their respective BUCS league. Exeter ran out 61-28 winners against Cardiff and secured promotion by following this up with a 66-32 win against Surrey.

Looking ahead to BUCS Premier South next season Head of Netball Denise Ellis commented “To win Western 1A with the University 1st team and have the opportunity to get back into Premier South has been an aim for the University side for the last few seasons. This success so far has been built on the determination and dedication of all the players within the performance squad and is testament to their hard work and perseverance throughout a very long season. We look forward to the challenge of facing Super league players week in week out next season”.

Men’s Cricket

The Men’s Cricket 1st team have fought their way back into the BUCS Premier league after a consistently dominant season in South 1, notching up 5 wins from 5 to take the league win. Facing Southampton Solent in a playoff for National league rights for next season, Exeter made no mistake hitting the winning runs in just 17 overs.

Reflecting on the season Head of Student Cricket Ruan Louw commented “The University of Exeter Men’s high performance squad worked incredibly hard over the winter months. With a clear goal in mind we entered the season well prepared and optimistic. The players applied their learning and started executing the skills on a more consistent basis. They gathered momentum throughout the season and have happily kept the winning habit to the point where we are undefeated and have successfully achieved our ultimate goal, promotion to the top flight of University cricket. Thursday we play for the National trophy on finals day in Kibworth versus Durham University”.

Waterpolo

The Waterpolo Men’s 1st team represented University of Exeter alongside the Men’s Hockey 1st team at Big BUCS Wednesday coming away with a silver medal in a high quality final at University of Nottingham.

In Western 1A they finished on equal points to University of Bristol Men’s 2nd team which was enough to give them the opportunity to play University College London in a bid to join BUCS Premier South next year. In two hotly contested fixtures Exeter narrowly lost the 1st game 6-8 so knew they needed to make their home fixture really count. Putting out a fantastic turnaround performance to win 18-8 on their home turf Exeter will play top flight BUCS Waterpolo next season.

 Men’s Football

The Men’s Football 1s team have fought to retain their place in BUCS Premier South and came through an incredibly tight 3 way playoff to stay in the top league. A 1-1 draw with University of Chichester and a 2-0 win against University of Bristol were enough to give them the opportunity to build on their fantastic quarter final BUCS Championship cup result from the current season in the league for the upcoming year.

All University of Exeter sport teams now turn their attention towards the new BUCS season and the start of their pre-season training blocks, beginning in August.
