Alex Sheppy - GB canoeist
Selection for Sheppy sees him compete against the best in the world
Alex Sheppy (BSc Biosciences), recently spent time in Bosnia & Slovenia competing for GB at Senior and U23 level.
The GB selected first year student has made the transition into Higher Education and competitive Canoe racing smoother than the wild water he is normally accustomed to racing down. Not only did he win the University’s first ever Canoe BUCS points, earn selection on the U23 and Senior Men’s GB teams, but he also found out that he passed his first year just after competing in the world cup competitions.
Alex reflected on his end of academic year racing accomplishments:
“I was pleased with how I raced given it was my first experience of a senior competition. I really noticed the step up so I’ve got lots to work on over the summer in preparation for U23 European Championships in Macedonia in August.”
“In terms of the British Athletes in my class, I placed 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th of the four over the 2 weekends, improving upon my results at selection in February. My best overall ranking was 32nd, in a very competitive international field. It was great to compete under the floodlights in the heats of the World Cup Finals in Celje with the biggest crowd I’ve ever raced in front of. (>500)”
Alex is now back in full time training and off for a training camp in North Yorkshire followed by a busy summer programme, before starting his second year in September.
