Exeter 2s Win BUCS Indoor Trophy Gold in the first year of the competition
Indoor Season finishes with a BUCS Gold for Exeter 2nd Team
The University’s Men’s 2nd team have taken BUCS Gold in the new Trophy Tournament that was hosted in the Devon Cricket Centre.
Honorary University Fellow Dr Bruce Coleman reflected on the successful day:
“Captain Jack Marston and his team became the first winners of the new BUCS Indoor Trophy Competition. Four teams were expected to turn up for the long-delayed finals stage held at our Cricket Centre yesterday, but Birmingham University and De Montfort University Leicester, didn't show and so a spirited Essex 1st Team and our Exeter 2s played a final extended to a four-innings game, a format that made it a more interesting contest. Inserted, we compiled a confident 106-3 and Essex could manage only 62-5 in reply, giving us a lead of 44. Then the game swung around with tighter Essex bowling and some miss placed shots produced a batting collapse, leaving Jack Marston as the last man standing with not many runs on the board.
In an innings that was a model of concentration and control, he made 61 off 37 balls out of 72 runs from the bat. Our total of 75-5 left Essex needing 120 to win and, though they started well, a late collapse left us winners by 41 runs. The performance by our 2s was reflective of their form which started their whole campaign in Cardiff back in late October. They always showed appetite, ambition and determination. When the last eight teams met at Edgbaston, there were seven university first teams there and one second team - Exeter. Now the last is the first name on the new trophy. Perhaps EUMCC teams in the outdoor competitions now starting can draw some inspiration from the achievement.”
With the weather threatening to prolong the outdoor season we hope that the club’s momentum can continue when the sun shines!
