Ethan Bamber in action at the U19 World Cup
Future’s bright for Bamber
First year BA Theology student Ethan Bamber continues his recent run of success and signs his first professional contract with Middlesex County Cricket. Middlesex have offered Ethan a 3 year summer deal, which allows him to play professional cricket at the highest level whilst continuing with his academic studies at the University of Exeter.
Middlesex has always been Ethan’s home club who he first represented as a junior at U15s. Since then he has made 10 appearances for the second eleven within 3 different competition structures and will be hoping to add to his professional cricket experience later this summer. Having been part of the England U19 ICC World Cup squad, Ethan laid down some impressive bowling statistics including 3 wickets for 18 runs in 6 overs against Bangladesh and ended the tournament with 8 wickets to his name. Reflecting on signing his 1st professional cricket contract Ethan commented “To sign with Middlesex, my longstanding club, is an incredibly humbling thing. It makes me very proud that the club has put its faith in me and I am determined to repay that! With regards to University, the summer contract allows me to continue with University and be involved with Middlesex full time in the summer, and I think this is really the perfect outcome. I have always found that I work better when I'm playing cricket and play better when I have my degree, something different, to focus on too and give perspective! I just hope I can do justice to both!”.
High Performance Manager (Sport) Charlotte Hale added “With current Somerset County Cricket Club captain Tom Abell being a graduate of our Sports Scholarship Scheme and High Performance Programme, it’s great to have Ethan representing England at junior level and now also taking his first opportunity within professional cricket whilst studying. We look forward to seeing how Ethan develops throughout his time at University and I am sure there will be many more successes to come”.
Cricket at the University of Exeter is one of the 9 focus sports and part of the High Performance Programme and over recent years Exeter has consistently been ranked 1st or 2nd of participating institutions in the BUCS rankings. Following a strong indoor season including qualifying for the ECB Indoor National Club Finals Day held at Lords, the University of Exeter Men’s Cricket Club start their outdoor BUCS season campaign on Wednesday 25th April against University of Portsmouth Men’s 1st, playing in Premier South. Leading the University side will be new University of Exeter member of staff and Head of Student Cricket Ruan Louw who joined us in early March. Best of luck to the team for their outdoor season.
