Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre hosted the finals
South West Regional Table Cricket Finals held at University of Exeter
On Thursday 4 May, seven schools and colleges took part in the South West Regional Table Cricket Finals in the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre, based at the University of Exeter.
Treviglas School, Westfield Arts College, Victoria Education Centre, South Dartmoor Community College, Southbrook School, Bradley Stoke Community School and Brisham Green B all took part in a packed day of fixtures with lots of excellent play on show.
Lord’s Taveners is the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, who aim to enhance the lives of disadvantaged and disabled young people through sport and recreation. Table Cricket places an emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship in an informal and enjoyable environment, whilst also offering a competitive edge.
The game is played on a table tennis table with side panels and sliding fielders placed around the table to create an arena. A small ball and ramp are used to bowl, and a wooden bat enables players to score runs, simulating a game of cricket.
Lord’s Taverners work in partnership with Devon Cricket Board (DCB), whose offices are based at the University, and helped in organising the event. DCB’s Schools Development Officer, Stephen Pritchard, commented:
“It is great to help and support the Table Cricket event as part of our partnership with Lord’s Taverners. Awareness of the sport is growing and we look forward to hosting more of these events in future years.”
Around 50 children took part on the day, with South Dartmoor Community College and Victoria Education Centre contesting a close final. South Dartmoor eventually ran out winners and, in the process, have qualified for the National Final at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 9 June.
