Varsity Victory for EUAFC 1st team

University of Exeter Men’s Football 1st Team defeated Swansea University 1st Team 4-2 in an enthralling match at St. James Park in front of over 3,300 supporters – securing the Football Varsity title for 2016.

The game opened at frantic pace with Exeter opening the scoring after 3 minutes courtesy of a stunning long-range curling effort. This was followed by two further goals before the 40 minute mark, allowing Exeter to enter half-time with a commanding 3-1 lead. The second half continued at high pace with both teams attempting to play neat, possession football. Exeter controlled the majority of play and ultimately won 4-2, much to the delight of the strong home support.

Whilst the annual Varsity game remains a special event in the University sporting calendar, this match had an even greater significance for the friends and family of former student and football club member, Loris Jeanningros, who tragically lost his life over the summer. The fixture helped to commemorate Loris and a respectful minute’s applause was held before the game in his honour.

Football club captain, Tom Bateson, said after the game; “It was a special performance from the lads and the perfect way to remember Loris. I’m sure everyone will remember tonight for years to come.”

In addition, donations from the game will go towards two worthy charities, Cardiomyopathy Association and Exeter City Football in the Community. The University has a long standing partnership with Exeter City Football Club, enabling St. James Park to be used as a venue for Varsity matches each year. In return, the football club use the University’s pitches to train on during the winter.

Director and Vice-Chairman of Exeter City FC, Julian Tagg, said; “The University is an important part of this great city. There has been a long standing relationship between our Football Club and the University and I hope we get the chance to host more Varsity matches in the future.”

The victory against Swansea means the 1st team have made a winning start to their BUCS Football Western 1A League Campaign, in which the University competes against the best teams in the West. Their next fixture is against Cardiff University 1st Team on the 26th October at Topsham Sports Ground.
